Boot Windows 7 in just under 10 seconds

Great success is achieved by Microsoft by reducing the boot timing for its latest operating system,Windows 7, to only 10 seconds.

This is amazing, considering the fact that the BIOS has to turn on everything in the system from the CPU to hard drive, before the

OS begins to load.

Windows 7 has achieved this feat of extremely low boot time by using a healthy hardware configuration. Moreover, most of the

hardware manufacturing firms are paying more attention on cutting the boot time.

For example the Lenovo Group Ltd is making some remarkable changes like:

* Helps to prevent the BIOS phase from the loading of driver.
* Fixing the drivers of on-board hardware components that were cumulatively causing massive delays.
* Avoiding the loading of unessential application being included in the Startup programs. Using msconfig to disable stuff that

runs on startup

Dell, Toshiba and HP are also on course to follow the same trend.

Windows 7 version works extremely good even in the case of multiple operating systems . If your hard disk has ample space then you

can create a partition and dual boot your system. When you will turn on your computer, it will ask you about the option of OS.

If you wish to improve the boot processing then Windows 7 offers you some ultimate tools as mentioned below:

* Defragmenter should be used frequently.
* Defragment your Windows page file and registry as well.
* Check your hard drive from the temporary files frequently.
* Load up Windows faster by using Startup Delayer a free program that will speed up the boot time of Windows by delaying the

startup of programs.
* MSCONFIG will help you keep a check on many of useless Startup programs.
* Use a program click memtest86 or Prime95 to check bad memories on your PC.
* Do check your BIOS version, if required update it.
* Run chkdisk to remove bad sectors in hard drive.

Windows 7 features: Virtual Hard Disk

Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, comes with a number of new features including relatively lesser known Virtual Hard Disk that enables a user to install various operating systems on a single machine.

The tool, which is a file formatted to be structurally identical to a physical Hard Disk Drive, enables you to test software on different operating systems and reduces the cost or hassle of actual hardware.

This feature which is included in latest Windows 7 allows a physical computer to mount and boot from an operating system contained within a VHD.

Printer Review : Canon Pixma IP4700 Inkjet

The Canon Pixma IP4700 is Canon's latest inkjet printer that retains the glossy black casing of its predecessor, the Canon Pixma IP4600, and also features stylish gunmetal highlights.

The Canon Pixma IP4700 also retains some of the features we loved most about the IP4600, including two paper trays, the fact users are warned on their PC screen if the print output tray is closed and the ability to print on to DVDs and CDs using the included dedicated tray.

The device also offers a number of improvements over the IP4600. These include the addition of Auto Photo Fix II to the bundled Easy-PhotoPrint EX software. One of the chief advantages of this software is that it can be set to automatically correct colour, contrast and brightness without making the resulting prints either too dark or to light - something that's particularly tricky to adjust for with under-exposed images. The Canon Pixma IP4700 also has a built-in duplexing capability.

We found the Canon Pixma IP4700 very easy to set up and install. Once we'd inserted the five single inks (cyan, yellow, magenta and two blacks), in the same way as with the IP4600, we were able to install the bundled software and then connect the printer to our PC using USB. Then the software then took us step-by-step through aligning the printheads before we were able to start printing.

As well as USB connectivity, the Canon Pixma IP4700 offers PictBridge connectivity which allows you to print photos direct from a digital camera without first having to download them to a PC.

Canon says the Canon Pixma IP4700's biggest improvement is that it's faster than its predecessor and can print 9.2 images per minute in black and approximately 8.1ppm in colour. In our tests, the Canon Pixma IP4700 printed a mixed colour and graphics document in 21 seconds, while our nine-page text document took 51 seconds, equating to an output rate of 10.5ppm.

In Draft mode black text looked clear and sharp and images featured clear detailing. Colours looked slightly faded in draft mode but looked vivid and bright in Normal and Best modes. Photographs looked clear and sharp with god detailing and flesh tones depicted realistically.

Canon Pixma IP2600 Color Inkjet Printer

Canon's Pixma iP2600 color inkjet printer has the goods where it counts, producing surprisingly decent print quality, even on plain paper. As a result, this supercheap printer's mediocre speed may be less of an issue for many buyers.

How mediocre was its output speed? In our tests, the Pixma iP2600 printed text on plain paper at a rate of 8.5 pages per minute--slower than both the Epson Stylus C120 and the Lexmark Z2420 Wireless. Its print speeds for color graphics and photos ranged from average to worse, but the actual printouts were worth the wait. Text samples looked deep-black and pretty crisp. Color images printed on plain paper appeared vivid, maybe even a bit overdone. On Canon's own photo paper, the same images improved markedly and were smooth, detailed, and natural.

Printer Installation Help and Support

The printer's simple, boxy design includes a 150-sheet rear input area and a 150-sheet front output tray. Both are surprisingly roomy, but the output tray--a foldout front panel with a narrow pivoting extension--is also disappointingly flimsy. On-screen prompts walk you through manual duplexing (two-sided printing). The ink cartridges are fairly easy to replace, and a helpful illustration sits above the bays.

The iP2600's control panel, however, is sparse and hard to decipher. It consists of two buttons with symbolic labels and integrated LEDs that turn on, turn off, or flash to communicate the printer's status. Such secret-code-like designs are typical among low-cost printers; apparently, making them easier to use costs too much.

The printer ships with standard-size black and tricolor cartridges; higher-yield versions are also available. Canon calculates the page yields based on a suite of standard documents with a mix of text and graphics. Even with the higher-yield cartridges, such a document costs at least 14 cents in ink alone (6.1 cents for black, 8.2 cents total for all three colors) and drains the cartridges within 300 pages or so. Simpler documents will use less ink.

Canon bundles useful software with the Pixma iP2600. The apps include a centralized interface for accessing the user guide and other support; an on-screen status monitor where you can also check printer settings; and Easy-PhotoPrint EX for editing and manipulating photos.

The Canon Pixma iP2600 is a cheap printer that many people could live with happily. It doesn't do much other than print well on both plain and special papers, but for this little money, tolerating its poky speed is worthwhile.

How to control Canon printer print font size?

The printer prints whatever it's told to by the computer. Your printer really doesn't control the fonts.

When you are printing stuff from the internet (web pages, email, etc.) the reason for the small print is that it is related to the size of the monitor and it's viewing setup (the higher the screen resolution, the smaller the print will be when printing it out even though it looks good on the monitor).

One way you can make the print larger when printing internet stuff & emails is by changing the print view size on the screen to a larger size in your web browser (this is separate from your other setting you've already setup). Go to the menu bar at the top (i.e. Internet Explorer), click on "View," then "Text Size" then select a size like "Larger" or "Largest" (something higher than what you're currently set to.)

Another method is to go to your menu bar at the top of your web browser, click on "File" then "Print Preview". At the top of the window there should be a small window with "Shrink To Fit" in it. Click the arrow for a drop down list and choose something probably above 90% or more (maybe 100 or 125%) and see how it changes the print size of what is to be printed out.

The only other method is to copy & paste the text into a text editing software like Word and adjust the text size there. If you're using a text program, then you simply adjust the size of the text to a 12 or 14 point, or larger, font size (adjust depending on the font and size you need) and that should do the trick.

iYogi Re-Defines Technical Support

Remote managed services are gaining a lot of attraction these days. Companies are looking to outsource the maintenance and monitoring of their IT infrastructure to a third party to improve efficiency and save costs. BizTech2.com caught up with Uday Challu, founding partner and CEO, iYogi, to see what the company has to offer in this space.

As far as Enterprise and SME customers are concerned, which verticals are you focusing on?

Our focus will mostly be on small companies with around five to 100 users and also firms that have multiple small branch offices like travel agencies, retail stores etc.

What kind of support services do you provide to your customers? What is the Green PC service?

iYogi provides the next generation of remote computer support services for consumers and businesses. For consumers, our live 24/7 support extends to technologies we use everyday, including hardware, software applications, devices, peripherals and networking equipment. iYogi also offers a full range of business IT solutions including managed monitoring, managed services, set-up and installation services, and incident-based services.

Green PC Service

With the current state of the global climate and increasing dependency on the computer, iYogi helps PC users reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time. iYogi’s Green PC service is the first in the independent computer support industry to offer customers a way to save money, conserve energy and protect the environment by optimising their PC’s efficiency. Consumers and businesses can save up to $200 per year, per desktop, in energy costs with iYogi’s Green PC application. This green application makes the computer environmentally friendly by reducing power consumption by almost 50 percent.

Our Green PC dashboard helps customise power settings and calculate power savings in kWh (kilowatt hour). The Green PC dashboard also gives a status on the reduction of CO2 and how responsible usage will benefit the environment by saving trees. A customised service that increases the energy efficiency of computers, undertakes the below-mentioned three primary initiatives:

- Computer assessment, analysing settings and PC energy use
- Customised efficiency planning geared specifically to the individual’s usage patterns
- Implementing setting changes to maximise the computer’s energy use

What are the technologies that allow you to offer 24/7 support and ensure there is no downtime at the client site?

We have invested significantly in developing a comprehensive monitoring and management tools stack. This enables us to manage and monitor all devices in the office network as well as for branch offices and mobile users. Our tools continuously monitor the customer’s network and notify our NOC (Network Operations Centre) in case of problems. Based on the set of events, tickets are automatically generated and escalated to corresponding teams. Over and above our proactive approach, the customer always has an option to call our 24X7 support line for issues that are not identified via the monitoring tools.

Please throw some light on your proprietary iMantra technology.

iMantra is a CRM system, which is tailor-made to suit the emerging business needs at iYogi. It allows for the formation of individualised customer relationships with the aim of providing personalised services to each subscriber. This tool is built on the latest java technology with a layered architecture that makes it scalable and secure. This architecture provides a seamless workflow and independent channels for various business needs: sales, support, quality and customer service. The entire system can be exposed in the form of secure APIs and Web services, which makes it a re-usable entity.

Your business model is similar to BPOs in India providing technical support to offshore customers. What unique values do you bring to this ecosystem that would help a potential client choose you over a competitor?

iYogi’s business model is different from traditional BPOs. Some key factors that differentiate iYogi include:

- Direct-to-consumer and -small business: iYogi delivers technical support services directly to consumers and small businesses and is a global technical support brand based out of India. Unlike traditional BPOs in India, iYogi does not provide any private label support and/ or work on behalf of large OEMs or software publishers.

- Optimised Processes: iYogi has developed proprietary processes for consistently delivering on a resolution rate of 87 percent, which is among the highest published benchmarks in the support industry, where averages hover in the range of 50 percent.

- Comprehensive technology platform: iYogi’s global delivery platform, iMantra, gets smarter with every customer interaction. It documents every problem, the solution and relevant hardware and software aspects, while capturing each customer’s demographic information and creating a behavioural profile. All of this information is at the fingertips of iYogi’s Global Tech Experts. This set-up combines a knowledge base with a comprehensive set of tools and technology expertise. iYogi offers a range of tools that complement its remote support services for helping customers maintain technology at peak performance levels. iYogi’s products include iYogi Smart PC Scan, iYogi Support Dock, iYogi Green PC and iYogi PC Optimisation.

How do you plan to move up the value chain in the times to come?

The growing use and penetration of the Internet and new Web-based applications has consequently opened the door to threats and vulnerabilities, which affect the system performance and ultimately lead to degrading performance. If the threats are diagnosed early on, the impact on efficiency can be minimised considerably. Currently, a user only realizes that he needs technical support once the damage has occurred and reactive methods of support are used to recover from the loss.

At iYogi, we are developing our capabilities to not only provide support when demanded, but to also monitor, pre-empt and fix threats before they can cause any damage to the computer. This will be possible only by combining technology with processes that are capable of re-defining the way technical support is delivered today.

What is your India strategy?

Technically, we are capable of servicing any geography including India. At this stage, we are looking for the right kind of partners to find access to potential customers and provide them a consolidated, 360-degree solution and services for issues relating to hardware, software, network etc. We aim to launch our India services in the coming six to eight months. Our services will offer clients a one-stop solution for all their business needs.
